Sunset over Beaver Pond, Thornhurst, PA photograph by John Canan May 2017.
That day I saw beneath dark clouds
the passing light over the water
and I heard the voice of the world speak out,
I knew then, as I had before
life is no passing memory of what has been
nor the remaining pages in a great book
waiting to be read.
-from the poem Opening of Eyes by David Whyte in Songs for Coming Home
Making this photo reminded me to my core that this is it. Every moment new, fresh, never before and never again – yet so much of it I trade for the future or squander on futile attempts to rewrite the past.
This day. This moment this is it. This is all there ever was or will ever be. Not then or way back when. Just now. Be with yourself the parts you cover over or try to brush past. Be with yourself as if this moment mattered as if it were your last. -jc
